Let me start out by saying that age, and aging, have never bothered me. I didn’t cry at 30, or at 40. And I know I will celebrate 50 and the person I am when the time comes. I’m just generally optimistic. I feel good, and I do not intend to wallow in self-pity when I open the first “over-the-hill” birthday card when I hit the half-century mark. It just better have money in it.
Aside from the fact that the aches and pains that come from a good workout or a long weekend in the garden tend to hang around and hurt like the dickens for a lot longer than they used to, getting older does not have to be a bad thing.
Because it’s an attitude.
And I know that certain things happen with age. Like the eyes. They go. I’ve worn contacts for nearsightedness since high school, and have just, in the past two years, had to supplement my accessory collection with several pairs of cute, funky reading glasses. (Hey, it was that or continue to call my kids into the kitchen to tell me if the recipe says ‘1/3′ or ‘1/2′.) And I have lots of pairs because, well, I lose them. I leave them places.
Because, for all this happy-go-luckyism about aging, there is no way, on God’s green earth, that I am going to get an eyeglass chain.
Even a cockeyed optimist has to draw the line somewhere.

Welcome to middle age, dear. They’re called “bifocals” and you can’t even see the lines.

Surely you jest!

Working on a computer all day has killed my eyesight. I’ll probably be using a seeing eye dog by the time I’m 40.

At 50 I offically hit bifocal land. It was a blow to the ego but not so bad after all. I embrace my age. And the best thing? The older you get, the mouthier you can be. I can’t wait to be eccentric!

Damn Skippy!!!
There is nothing wrong with my eyes. Everyone just writes and types too small.
And! There is no way in hell I’m going to wear a pair of reading glasses on a lanyard around my neck!

Yeh, my arms have become too short as well . . .It’s a good excuse to get other’s to do the tricky stuff like threading needles or readjusting your sound surround speaker jacks . . . Just watch those multi-focals, they take some getting used to. I won’t use a chain, wear those half stockings under skirts, resort to cardigans . . . I may well invest in a three wheel motorised schooter with a flag on the back so I can barge through pedestrians in the shopping centre tho.

Am I the only one here who wants a chain for my glasses? Hmmm… ok then. Never mind.
September 27, 2007 at 7:18 pm
After wearing ‘reading/computer’ glasses for 16 years, I found that I NO LONGER NEED THEM.
According to my eye doctor, my sight has actually IMPROVED as I aged!
It may reverse itself again later, but I’m okay with that.
I plan to wear cats eye glasses, circa 1950.
They will be decorated in camo.

I with you sister! My 45th is rapidly approaching and my life has never been better. And that is a fact! So far the eyes are ok, but when the time comes I’ll make the adjustments. When I can no longer ride my motorcycle, it might be time to re-evaluate.
Michele sent me,
Mike

I had bifocals when I was twelve, then contacts at fourteen, and finally, at 32, LASIK. Five years later, I’m seeing 20-20 with both eyes together, 20/25 one at a time.
I can live with worsening vision as I grow older, because however bad it gets, nothing can be worse than a lifetime of not even being able to see the big E.
Thanks for visiting my site.

But if you got an eyeglass chain made out of barbed wire, you’d be the badassest Wordnerd EVER.
September 27, 2007 at 10:08 pm
No, no, no. No chains, those things are only worn by…ah, never mind. I was going to say, ner… but am thinking much better of that.
You know who, ^ up there? had a good time with me. From 5 till 18 years old I wore glasses. Then a miracle occurred and I didn’t need them. But at age 34, back they came. Not cool. Not funny, either. At least not to me.
Where’s the door?

I am not enjoying the numbers being thrown around here. I will be 53 Next Friday. Good Lord. AND this coming Monday I am going to be fitted with a diagnostic pair of BIFOCAL TORIC SOFT CONTACTS. Woot!
I hope.

Haha, this made me laugh… I’ve always had beyond perfect eyesight, but in the past couple of years I’ve sensed it going downhill. I blame staring at a computer all day, but either way I think I’m going to have to have my eyes rechecked soon.
Point being, I’m going to have to get about 50 pairs of glasses to scatter around the house and my office, because I am with you on the NO EYEGLASSES CHAIN movement!!
September 28, 2007 at 12:22 pm
I’m using paragon contact lenses (the kind you put in at night to change the shape of your cornea). I have one eye corrected for far sight and the other for near sight. It works really REALLY well for me after the initial period of adjusting the way you use your eyes.
September 28, 2007 at 1:47 pm
Jus’ go ahead and have two eyes that see completely differently, like I do, and throw away those glasses.
Then start bumping into walls and falling down stairs and stuff because your depth perception is shot to smithereeens….just like me.
Sigh.

Age?! I thought my diminished eyesight was from all the mastur– ah… um the… all the carrots I’m not eating.
September 29, 2007 at 9:25 am
Life is great, beginning at 40 and then it starts to go downhill later, after 60…..LOL
Eyeglass chains come in very handy when you are travelling. I wore one in Europe; who cares what they think?
September 29, 2007 at 9:46 pm
Had me worried at halftime.
The other LSU came out in the 2nd half and administered a proper thrashing to Tulane.

Those glasses on chains only look good if the person has a 48DD chest for them to rest on.
